Macau is a peculiar city, where wandering through its streets makes one occasionally drift away from reality as if walking endlessly along a corridor between East and West. There’s an indescribable sense of immersion and dislocation. After nearly 500 years of colonial rule, the city returned to China in 1999, over 20 years ago. Macau's tradition and modernity coexist under the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy. I attempt to find clues in the evolution of cemeteries, as the deceased do not lie; cemeteries preserve historical memory. The prevailing thoughts, architecture, religion, and philosophy of an era are reflected in the form and location of graves. I photographed almost all the cemeteries in Macau, including St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Cemitério de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Taipa Carmo Municipal Cemetery, Cemitério Sá Kong da Taipa, and Coloane Municipal Cemetery. I hope to reveal Macau's unique intersection and rebirth through the styles of its tombs.
